2022 Sports Museum Network of Australian and New Zealand (SMN) Annual Meeting

This year the annual meeting of the Sports Museum Network of Australian and New Zealand (SMN) and the Sporting Traditions Conference (part of the AHA National Conference for 2022) correspond in both time and (broad) location – Geelong and Melbourne.  It’s a solar alignment that might never happen again in our lifetimes, so we’re taking the opportunity to create an exploding Supernova of celestial sports history beauty!!  Or something.

The SMN has been working closely with ASSH colleagues to ensure that our two events dovetail as neatly as possible.  As such we’ll be joining up with you all in Geelong on the afternoon of Wednesday June 29 to tour the sites of interest at GMHBA Stadium.  After that we’ll all head to the MCG for the ASSH-organised forum which the SMN is very proud to be hosting.

If, at the end of the formal ASSH activities, you’d be keen to jump into our own event for the remaining two days (Thursday June 30 and Friday July 1) we would be delighted to welcome you!

SMN Annual Meeting Program 2022 (including the ASSH-overlap day on Day 1) .  We have a couple more (fabulous) speakers lined up who are still working through their travel plans before we can announce them, but almost everything else is confirmed.

Booking process

Bookings can be made here:  https://roller.app/nsm/products/sportsmuseumnetwork2020?date=20220629#/sessions

The ticket options are for a three day pass ($175.00) – which includes the Day 1 trip to Geelong – or for a two day pass ($110.00).  Please note that every single dollar of every ticket purchase goes into either the catering or travel costs.  The places we’re visiting are – very generously – not charging for entry and the MCC is waiving the MCG room hire fees for the event.  In addition, the Australian Sports Museum is supporting the event by picking up some of the catering tab, to ensure that we can keep the ticket costs as low as possible.  Every attendee (whether speaker, session chair or other) will be asked to acquire a ticket to cover their own costs.  Myself included!

List of convenient Melbourne hotels, which includes instructions on how to get from each of them to us.

If you have an interest in the subject of sports museums (and/or sports libraries, sports heritage centres, etc.) please consider becoming a member of SMN.  No cost and no obligation, but we’ll keep you informed of our various activities and annual meeting.  Please email Hannah Hibbert to join: hhibbert@australianturfclub.com.au

Sporting Fixtures

Although the AFL fixture has not yet been released for late June/early July, we have it on good authority that games will be held at the MCG on Saturday July 2 & Sunday July 3.  If any out of towners are staying over that weekend, please let me know if you’d like a ticket or two for those games.  No rugby league, rugby union or football/soccer in Melbourne that weekend.  The Super Netball grand final is scheduled for the Saturday evening, with the location dependent on the qualifying teams.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any specific questions.
